Defective Drugs –
Ephedra
Ephedra, or the generic drug ephedrine, is a
common ingredient in a number of dietary supplements.
It is an amphetamine-like stimulant that works
by stimulating the nervous system and is primarily
used by people who are trying to lose weight.
However, it may potentially have dangerous effects
on the nervous system and heart. In most severe
cases, it can cause death.
Other documented health hazards associated with
Ephedra are: high blood pressure, irregular heartbeat,
heart palpitations, strokes, myocardial infarctions,
chest pains, seizures, insomnia, nausea and vomiting,
fatigue, dizziness and/or nerve damage.
The increasing number of complaints lodged by
people who have taken dietary supplements containing
Ephedra is a cause for concern. Although currently
less than 10 people are said to have died taking
dietary supplements containing Ephedra, this number
seems to be on the rise. It is important to keep
in mind that dietary supplements are not subject
to pre-market review by the FDA and their safety,
dosage and even effectiveness is not scientifically
proven. People taking dietary supplements containing
Ephedra should be aware of potential health risks
associated with these products. If there are enough
victims of dietary supplements containing Ephedra,
it is highly possible that a class action lawsuit
may be launched or that the FDA will issue a health
warning or even ban the products. |
