Cosmetic Surgery –
Liposuction
Many people are resorting to drastic measures
and opting for liposuction in lieu of weight loss,
to help beautification. However, liposuction is
an extremely invasive procedure that can cause
a series of health problems, even death, if not
performed by an experienced and board-certified
physician. Due to the risks associated with liposuction,
litigation for medical malpractice is all too
common.
The most common complaints involving liposuction
are: disfigurement, contour irregularities, numbness
and disappointment with the outcome. These are
only minor compared to the major complications
that can arise from liposuction, such as: abdominal
perforations, Lidocaine overdose, pulmonary edema
and pulmonary embolism. Some of these complications
can be life threatening or even fatal. One of
the major problems is that doctors perform a series
of other cosmetic procedures together with the
liposuction procedure. It is a known fact that
when a patient has been under anesthesia for more
than six hours, undergoing multiple cosmetic procedures,
the probability of complications occurring rises
dramatically.
Due to the increase in the number of fatalities
from liposuction procedures annually, many state
medical boards are now beginning to take notice
and are looking to take regulatory intervention.
Taking this into consideration, medical malpractice
or even wrongful death suits are on the increase. |
